早年经历
卡特生于英格兰北约克郡的哈罗盖特（Harrogate,NorthYorkshire,England）。他的父亲在英国国防部工作，母亲是女性务农民兵，后来成为学校秘书。卡特进入哈罗盖特的艾什维尔学院，并在毕业那年成为优等生。后来他在苏塞克斯大学学习法律，并成为刚成立的戏剧协会的重要人物。卡特在《SerjeantMusgrave'sDance》中扮演了主角。这部戏剧是在新建的GardnerArtsCentre剧院中第一部由学生制作的戏剧。
两年后，他从大学辍学，并加入了布莱顿（Brighton）的一个实验剧团。

20世纪70年代，他开始自己的专业表演生涯，参演多部经典的电影和电视剧，如《

疯狂的乔治王》，至今任然活跃于银幕。
